International Lofts

Daniel Altman approached me to do the garden design work for his unique development project in the Fruitvale district of Oakland. Daniel had a great vision for providing affordable housing that did not sacrifice design, and he insisted each unit have its own garden. The private garden of each unit was designed with 'place holder' plantings that would not present a challenge to a new home owner who may want to remove them in order to make the space their own.

Please enjoy the remarkable before and after shots of this testimony to vision.   I have continued to work with the HOA at this location and am forever pleased and amazed at how each home owner has eked out their own piece of garden and integrated nature into their lifestyle.

Community Park area, before. The white building in the background is now called 'The Arches' it was the last portion of the develpment to be completed. Please scroll down to see details of 'The Arches'

The community park area which fronts 'The Arches' building has several winding paths that are connected to a central patio in the center. The patio has tables, benches, umbrellas and is used casually as well as for the HOA meetings that take place monthly.   A unique sculpture enhances the look with a design that vaguely implies a child's play structure.

This is one area of the development where the building was cut into allowing for open air walkways between living spaces. When you scroll down you will see this building and it's opening in the distant background of one of the photos.

In the distance you can see the building that was opened up to allow for open air walkways between living spaces.

This is another area where a building was opened up to allow for an open air walkway between living spaces. An old set of mechanicals was removed during construction and repositioned in this courtyard as sculpture.

As you scroll down through the pictures below you will be looking at 'The Arches' the last phase of the International Lofts development.
