When
I presented concepts to Nola during the design process she selected a
spiral for the focal point of the garden and we decided to construct it
as a pebble mosaic.
Nola
was very 'hands on' during construction. She always made time to check
in and be a part of the fine tuning that happens when the design leaves
the paper and becomes reality.
We did a couple of tests first.
And then we began, one pebble at a time.
Everyone helped.
The
spiral was made of 2" black Mexican pebble in the field of 3/4" Noia
pebble. We put a thin separator in to allow for expansion during earth
shifts.
The sit wall that surrounds the pebble mosaic was made from Noia cobble with a tumbled quartz on top.
Nola
wanted textured surfaces for the paths so she chose the tumbled quartz
here as well. She later told me that when her niece and nephew came to
visit they gave the paths a big thumbs up. They are fun!

We constructed several raised vegetable boxes that radiated out from the spiral. But the plants grew in as well.

Two
years after the creation of the spiral Nola had a change of heart and
decided to change out the pebble mosaic. The pebbles held onto a lot of
dirt and there were drainage issues. So the spiral was demolished, a
drain system installed, concrete poured and an acid stain was applied.
The cobble sit wall was retained.
